Canton Texas Meet-Up!

Maggie at The Veranda in Canton has graciously offered her location as a meet-up point for our bloggers Meet-N- Greet. The Veranda is located on Canton grounds in a big metal building at roads 43 & 43A - by the creek, just across from "The Porch". (She will have some light refreshments for us.) Margo and I will be shopping Canton on Thursday May 28. The meet-up time is 12:00 and we're planning about 45 minutes to 1 hour to visit with folks. (If you have a book or magazine you want signed, be sure to bring it!) I can't wait to get junking!
See you soon!

Here Kitty Kitty. Cat Bed Junk Project.

Meet Oliver! Oliver is a beloved member of my sister's family. Today he is a happy cat! With the help of Gail, my brother-in-law, and my sister, Karla, Oliver has a new bed.

I acquired this old table almost a year ago. I immediately had the idea of turning it into a dog bed and just never got around to it. I suspect you have a few ugly ducklings lurking in your garage waiting to become swans.

Well it didn't exactly become a dog bed...

The headboard is made from scrap trim measured and cut to fit between two legs.

I purchased four 4 1/2" finials at Lowes. Vintage knobs would work, as well. Gail cut aprox. 1" off leg bottoms to accommodate base of finials.

The 2"H feet are made from scrap pine and secured with wood glue and screws. Simple blocks of wood are a sufficient alternative.

Thanks to Gail aka Hardly Able Workshop the construction went smoothly. (Overall finished dimensions are 20"W x 29 1/2"L x 26 1/2"H.) FYI Apron is 3 1/2"H...perfect for holding our cushion.

After selecting my vintage fabric for the cushion, I chose Valspar Dune grass interior latex satin to match. I lightly sanded, primed, and painted.

To add a little pizazz I used a paint marker I purchased at Michael's to fill in existing router lines.

My sister made a cushion with leftover foam. Don't sew? Use a bed pillow. I know what you are thinking. It looks awful girly to be a boy cat's bed...

Oliver doesn't seem to mind.

I am packing this weekend and hitting the road for Minnesota via Canton Texas. Check out Margo's blog for our scheduled Canton meet-up. This week's winner of the Good Junk Seal of Approval is Jennifer Price. She is a brilliant junk artisan with amazing junk style. Don't forget Junk Revolution on-line store has junking tees for dad!

Since I will be traveling for a few weeks, I won't have a new post for a while. Thanks for all your junk and munch travel recommendations on the Junk Revolution message boards. I will hit as many as I possibly can without driving my husband crazy!
Peace,
Ki

Antique Mall Detour.

The plan was to rise early, fill my thermos with hot coffee, and head to Webster Florida's Monday Flea Market, (about an hour away). It rained hard throughout the night and was still pouring when I straggled out of bed and looked out my window at the dark swollen clouds. Wondered how many vendors would show? I know they say rain or shine...I also know some dealers don't adhere to that philosophy. My sister Karla was thrilled to hear our plans had changed and we'd be junking indoors!

There are 2 antique malls just up I-75 that I have been meaning to explore ever since I arrived in Ocala a few months back. Our first stop was Smiley's Antique Mall in Micanopy FL.

I need to remind myself to focus when shopping antique malls. With such a large assortment of antiques and vintage junk I get confused and exhausted easily. I took pics of a few of my favorite finds.

A rumble seat basket...someone took very good care of, it was in excellent condition.

I am always attracted to trophies. Are you?

Thought this clock might be good for the Junk Corral at the Bonanza.

This too.

This turq table is actually a coffee table..very cool!

I never quite understood the head thing...my friend, Tacy, collects them.

A gravy boat for my personal stash.

Interesting shape coffee cup..squarish.

Terry, a friendly knowledgeable dealer, explained the interesting history behind his fish decoys and took me on a guided tour of Smiley's.

My favorite find of the day...this industrial freezer handle. It may turn out to be the piece of junk I dream about tonight and have to go back and pick up tomorrow.

I always look forward to finding something I have never seen before. Smiley's did not disappoint. There were some great buys, fascinating finds, and beautiful antiques.

Lunch just down the street proved to be absolutely delicious. Barbecued sliced pork sandwich on a toasted bun with a side of coleslaw! MMMM!

Next stop A Antique Mall, Marion county's largest, boasting 125 plus vendors in 20,000 square feet. Proprietor, Warren Keen, has been in the bus. over 40 years and moved to Reddick FL from West Palm 3 1/2 years ago.

This dealer obviously has a sense of humor! Great display choice...fishing lures and fancy china.

I am attracted to organ knobs...is that odd?

A Antique Mall has one of the best selections of furniture I have seen in a long time. My sister Karla is wondering who sleeps in this kind of bed? (Junk queens, I guess.) Chairs, Tables, Armoires, China cabinets. It is crazy how much furniture they house. Mid century modern, Victorian , primitive, even loads of rattan.

This dental cabinet is very unique. The cabinet is wood and pretty ornate. All the drawers are metal inside.

I am thinking I might want to start a horse trophy collection...

I love old paintings. I am curious, who held the brush and what inspired them to paint?

Pretty colors!

Love these little souvenir bottles.

I once had a pet rat that ate my brother's bug collection. Eeek! I was in big trouble.

A great buy...includes bakelite silverware.

Hamm's the beer refreshing. I'm from Minnesota!

It never stopped raining. We enjoyed the day junkin' indoors. Both Malls are just off I-75 south of Gainesville so be sure to check them out if you are in the neighborhood!

I leave for Minnesota in a week via Canton Texas! Yippee! More junking!
Peace,
Ki

And the Winner is...

After careful thought, Matthew Mead and I agree the winner of the Ugliest Light Fixture in the World Contest is...

It was a difficult decision as there were so many great ideas...The ugly chrome tubed ceiling fixture made it to my workshop.

I removed the sockets inside the silver tubes and replaced with wood dowel rods. I measured, cut, and screwed the dowel rods to the fixture. I slipped the tubes over the dowel rods and secured with porcelain nobs. (I used hanger bolts to screw nobs into dowel rods.)

Letters are self adhesive page pebbles from Michael's Crafts.

A Powerful Pete medallion covers the whole in the center. (Since the back of the fixture was open, I added a 1" x 4" board for hanging.)

I bet you are wondering who wins the $100. gift certificate for Junk Revolution's online store? Congratulations to ALVN of WhisperWood Cottage! Brilliant idea! Please contact me for redemption instructions at ki.junkrevolution@gmail.com.

Thanks for all your incredible ideas! You are amazing! Be sure to check out Matthew Mead's website, he is my style hero!
Peace,
Ki
