Sweet Good Byes

As I scrape ice from my windshield for the last time, I wonder what it will be like not owning a truck. I have decided to trade in my trusty steed for a more compact model. I flunked parallel parking when I was 16 and haven't improved much since. I figure my big black pick-up just isn't gonna work for me in LA. I am sad to say goodbye to my friend that has dutifully carried hundreds of loads of junk over the years without a single complaint.

I suspect I will become one of those people with chairs, salvage, and tables strapped to the roof of my much smaller vehicle. Oh my. Any tips would be helpful!
Cheers,
Ki

  2. It's ok to have a truck in L. A. Especially with your business. Really. You will love California.

  3. I recommend the Toyota Prius, have been driving one since 2005 and I love it. I travel, thrift shop, garage sale and do craft shows for my jewelry business using a Prius. It is deceptively roomy, has split folding back seats, plenty of leg room and near zero emmissions!
    Good luck with your move!

  4. Aw I am dreaming of getting a truck. My Toyota isn't cutting it any more. At an auction I went to earlier this year, I had to sell stuff I just bought because I literally could not squeeze one more thing in my car!! Maybe you could get a small SUV or a compact truck?

  5. I got a van this year, after I swore that I'd never drive one and now I will never be without one!
Before that I had a VW New Beetle and the back seats folded down flat and with the hatch up...you would be amazed what I strapped into it!
But that VW had a lot of costly repairs!!!

  6. I wish you the best in LA Ki, you're so brave! I drive a honda element and Yes, I'm in my element when I'm junking in it! The seats fold up and come out easily in back, oh and the seats lay all the way down so you can car camp! I can get so much in mine, but there are days when I wish I had a truck. The milege is ok, 24 mpg, not great but it's not a truck and easy to park.
    Good luck to you!

  9. Oh gosh, you will be in for a culture shock! Minnesota to California! I pray your move goes well and I'm sure you'll love being closer to your kids! No idea on the vehicle...good thing is, it's not a life commitment. Don't like what you pick..trade it!

  10. Just get a SUV and lay the seats down. I have had a Grand Cherokee Jeep and now a Chevy Trailblazer SUV and I can manage to get most anything in them when I lay the back seats down.

  12. Ditto on the suv... I drive an explorer and the third seat folds down, as well as the middle row... I can fit vintage china cabinets, old chairs and bunches of small's too with room to spare...!Oh, and the sun roof will be a must in California!
    Have fun!

  14. There are lots of small sized SUV's out there, (I drive a Nissan Rogue) and they get great mileage.
So sorry to see the Junk Truck go away. Let us know what you get in it's place. I remember Sandy rode around in the back of that truck for several weeks :)

  15. My little Subaru Forrester can cram quite a bit in it. The back is big enough for a 50" flat panel TV.

Good luck to you in LA and welcome from the West coast of rainy Seattle!

  17. My friend and I go junking every Friday in her Prius, I have a truck. We've never had to go back to pick anything up. We had two garden benches a beach chair, and other smalls when we slid a bow front dresser into the back! Another time we fit in a 6 foot army cot, I was pretty much kissing the front windshield, but we had 3 people that day and had less make-it-work options. Deceptively roomy is exactly right, it's something about the curved shape of the hatch.
Welcome to California! I think you'll find the lifestyle and people very similar, and how lovely to be close to family.

  22. Good luck in California. Happiness is being near your children! My suggestion is to make a new best friend with someone who owns a truck!!

  23. Ki, I admire your ability to strike out and begin new adventures in CA. Your children are such blessings. That recent photo of you and them was picture perfect. I love coming by your blog. Good luck with your vehicle. I love my Liberty Jeep.

  24. I am dreaming of moving up from my 1993 Honda Civic Hatchback, which now has 180,000+ miles on it, to its newer family member, a Honda Fit. Over the years, the HB has been very trustworthy, great road car, and I have loved hauling my goodies home from flea markets, estate sales, antique markets. It has carried a large baker's rack. Chairs and other small furniture? No problem. Great mileage and low maintenance. I met a couple who told me about traveling cross country in their new Fit, sleeping in the roomy back all the way. So, till a Fit shows up in my driveway, my little Civic HB still zips down the road and may very well hold out for an "antique" license plate. Enjoy your trip across country, and good luck!

  26. I drive a Mitsubishi convertible all over Orange County, garaging every Saturday. It's amazing what you can get in my car with the top down! A few months ago I brought home two bedside tables and two Midcentury Modern armchairs on the same trip. If you don't want to drive a pickup, a convertible is the next best thing--and way more fun to drive in SoCal!

  27. Seriously...find yourself a Pontiac Vibe...2004/Four door if possible...no, I don't work for a car dealership and I'm not joking! LOL... I moved to CA from the midwest 6 yrs ago and my little red car brought me across safely and then some...I am that person you described!!! Not only do I love it, I'm proud of it!! And even though my little red car is now long past when most would trade her in, I'm still in love with her....My car can squeeze into those tight spaces yet carry two over stuffed chairs on the inside...and that's just the begining! And best of all, I still get compliments on how 'Hot' my car is!!! If the motor ever goes, I plan on having a new one put in! HA! Safe journey, welcome to California!

  28. I drive a civic and when I can't make it work I rent a truck from Home Depot for $19 an hour (no extra insurance fees). You just show up at the store and if the truck is there it is yours. If you aren't traveling too far, you don't even have to refill the gas.
