Calling All Junkers!
Emma at Midwest Living Magazine called me today to get the scoop on some of my favorite Midwest antique towns or trails for an upcoming issue. I explained to her that Junk Revolution members are the best when it comes to antiquing and junking tips and I'd ask you about your fav spots and why you love them.
Must be in the Midwest and be the kind of place you would love to go with your girlfriends or antiquing partner. The more shops in the area the better. They are planning on including Walnut Iowa, so if you want to tell us why you like Walnut...go for it.
Of course they have a tight deadline so rattle on! Oh, and they may mention your name! I also added it as a topic on Junk Revolution Community message board so you could comment here or over there.
Peace,
Ki
Well I was just in Fremont, NE today with a bit of time after having my wisdom tooth pulled. While I was still numb thought I'd hit some antique stores. There are five very close together downtown. They each have their little personality. Rougher one place, higher end another, but a pretty good spot to go. I also live close to Columbus, NE and there are quite a few shops there. My favorites are Colonial Antiques and Cottonwood but I actually haven't been to a couple. Surprisingly.
ReplyDeleteVolo, IL, Richmond, IL, both are crazy good spots!!!

P.S. I'm sure I can come up with more!!!
I can't wait for the Sandwich Antiques Markets to start up down in Sandwich IL, once a month May thought October. They've got AMAZING vendors. I never leave without something fabulous from a substitute wedding ring (when I was pregnant) to a set of chairs for my daughter
ReplyDeleteHi Ki,
ReplyDeleteNorth Dakota's antiques are authentic and the antique/junk craze is alive and kickin! Tell Midwest Living they should come on over and discover it for themselves! I LOVE the downtown Fargo ND shopping experience...it is my antique "fix" out here on the prairie. Along the MN/ND border, you will find the Moorhead Antique Mall...a multi-vendor antique extravaganza from primitives to Victorian antiques, always a must-see. Then, head in to Fargo, park your car and walk Broadway for that downtown shopping experience. You'll find a modern interpretation of junk-style at "Funky Junque", boutiques that creatively mix Grandma's antiques with the painted canvases and sculptures of local artists, a tiny treasure of a store called "O'Day Cache" that showcases STUNNING, intricately carved Chinese cabinets and benches crafted 200 years ago, a quirky and fun shop called "Zambroz" selling vintage jewelry and tin toys, a multi-vendor antique shop with everything including the antique farm house sink, and a hip & happening urban shop with large scale furnishings and bold graphics (Domino Magazine style) called "Vlana Vlee". You mix all that with a smattering of coffee shops, clothing and shoe boutiques and the famous Hotel Donaldson (for a yummy cocktail) and you have found a fun and surprisingly "happening" little corner of North Dakota to spend a day with friends!
Continue east and you will find that Valley City is host to several antique shops in it's downtown area as well. Just another 1 1/2 hours and you find yourself in Carrington North Dakota.Known as an antique/junk heaven for one autumn day out of the year....the day of JunkFest and the Flea market. I love it because it is a RUSH to see the gals running to the Fairgrounds at the 9am ribbon cutting...the excitement is contagious! It is a delightful day for shoppers and sellers...a day with friends, sharing a love of all things old...and EATING!! The Fairgrounds come alive with JunkFest creations & Flea Market vendors selling everything from depression glass to wagon wheels to furniture and jewelry...the Lutheran Youth Group and Boy Scouts serve up yummy lunches, the Main Street antique/gift shops are filled with chatty shoppers, and the community opens their barns/garages/yards to showcase their antiques, quilts and junk creations. It is a MINI Oranoco, if you will,...without the homemade ice cream sandwiches.... We serve coconut cream pie! Check out www.junk-fest.blogspot.com , if you scroll to the bottom of the page, there is a slide show of last year's sale. Please Ki,let Midwest Living know that North Dakota is bloomin with antiques, creative junkers and an eclectic array of wonderful shopping experiences...and they could be the first to showcase it!!! Thanks, Lynette C.

Can I get you or one of your followers to check out my blog and let me know if anyone can identify the "thingy" that I posted. I don't know what it is and none of my followers responded. HELP ME !!!
ReplyDeletethough I now live in the Pacific NW, I grew up in Cedarburg, WI and still make a trip back to visit family - and always makes sure it coincides with Maxwell Street Day - this event, held at Fireman's Park about 4 times a year, has been going on for more than 30 years and is a great source of fabulous finds. While in town, there is also the Old Woolen Mill (with great shops) and a downtown street lined with local shops and great community spirit.
ReplyDeleteHi, I visited Cindees blog and found the link to yours, I have spent ages going through your posts! I wish we had something like those junk yards/markets over here.fabulous site and I will visit again.
ReplyDeleteHi junkers! There is an awesome 3 story Flea Market/antiques store in downtown Kansas City, down by the City Market, that is my favorite so far and there is anything and everything you could want to look at or buy..I have to stay away from that place! FUN!
ReplyDeleteSpringfield, Ohio has an antique extravaganza 3 times a year at their fairgrounds. My friend and I go every year! It is extremely large and takes all day! I believe it is the 3rd weekend in April, July and Sept. Hope Ohio is considered Midwest, we consider ourselves midwesterners! Love this site.
ReplyDeleteOnce you find all that wonderful junk you can swing into the RBPCo. in Andover, Mn. At the Barn, you will not only find more fabulous junk, but you will find magical ways to re-use and display your new treasures. It's a great place to bring the gals and spend a few hours searching for the unexpected and finding the inspiration you need for your seasonal decorating whimsey's. Down the road is a great little town, Anoka, that also has some fun shops to explore.

Wow, I like all the info on here!! I've been to a lot of them around the TC, so am pretty familiar with them. I love Funky Junque in Fargo, and if you haven't been there yet, Ki, you'll have to check it out if you're in the area. I did post something on my blog about it, but the pictures don't do it justice. Kriss, the owner is awesome and has great style. There is also a new occasional sale opening in Anoka in May called the French Flea and will be the second weekend of the month. I'm not the owner, but will be consigning there. It'll be a great addition to the RB Potting Co. Hope you get more comments on here. I want to know more hot spots. I'm a darn good shopper!! Ha!
